Maintenance guide
How to look after your solar, heat pump and insulation — and keep your SEAI grants valid.
Solar panel maintenance

- ✓Use a soft brush and clean water — avoid abrasive cleaners
- ✓Check for bird droppings, moss or shading from new growth
- ✓Monitor your inverter display or app for unexpected drops in output
- ✓Annual professional inspection recommended for systems over 5 years old
- ✓Check roof fixings and flashings every 2–3 years
Heat pump maintenance
- ✓Air-to-water heat pumps should be serviced annually by an F-gas engineer
- ✓Clean or replace air filters every 3–6 months
- ✓Keep the outdoor unit clear of leaves, debris and overgrown plants
- ✓Check refrigerant levels are correct — only a certified engineer can do this

Insulation — what to check
- ✓Attic insulation does not generally require maintenance but check for rodent damage
- ✓Ensure attic ventilation is not blocked by insulation (leave eaves clear)
- ✓External wall insulation (EWI): inspect render coat for cracks or moisture ingress annually
- ✓Cavity wall insulation: check SEAI certification certificate is stored safely
- ✓If you notice cold spots or condensation on walls, have a thermal survey done
Battery storage maintenance
- ✓Lithium batteries require minimal maintenance — no active servicing needed
- ✓Keep battery unit in a dry location between 5°C and 35°C
- ✓Monitor via the battery app for unusual temperature or charge cycles
- ✓Most batteries have 10-year warranties — register yours after installation
- ✓If battery stops charging or shows error codes, contact your installer
SEAI grant inspection tip
SEAI inspects a random sample of grant-funded installations. Keep all contractor invoices, SEAI approval letters and product datasheets for at least 7 years. The installation must remain in place and functional for the warranty period stated in your grant approval.
